Merrick is the founder of the Capital Courts Training Centre and has logged over 23,000 hours of individual technical training sessions since opening the centre in 2011. As a former professional player in South Africa, he was involved in conducting clinics in the "townships" and schools. This is where he found the passion for training and inspiring young players to be the best players and best people they could be. Merrick has won championships in university and at the pro level but takes pride in the various "Community Builder" awards that he's received from the United Way, Black History Ottawa, Jamaican-Ottawa Community Association and the Global Community Alliance. Capital Courts Academy has given him more opportunities to impact the lives of players off the court, which is where many players struggle.
