Originally from New Brunswick, Shen played on Team NB for a number of summers including two Canada Games. After leading her high school team to a provincial championship, she played for Bishop's University from 1996-2001. She continued her education and obtained a Master's Degree from the University of Ottawa in Sport and Exercise Psychology. With a desire to give back to the sport she got so much out of, Shen decided to coach and began at the local high school level and then onto the OBA Clubs starting with the GCBA Wolverines (Midget Girls). Shen then got involved with the Ottawa Nationals both with the PREP and JUEL teams. She recently took a hiatus from coaching to focus on her family which grew in January 2018 when her son Jayce was born.
